Argan vs Coconut vs Jojoba: Which Hair Oil Is Right for Your Hair?
Every hair oil is sold as if it does the same thing. They do not. The difference between coconut, argan and jojoba is not marketing texture or scent. It is whether the molecule can get inside the hair shaft at all, and that has been measured directly.
This guide covers what the research shows about oil penetration, why the answer is different for damaged and undamaged hair, and how to choose. It also explains where the popular hair porosity framework holds up and where it does not, because that matters for how you use any of this.

First: what porosity actually means
Most hair oil advice online sorts you into low, medium or high porosity, usually via the float test: drop a strand in water, see if it sinks.
The float test does not work. It has never been validated in the cosmetic chemistry or trichology literature, and it is not taught in regulated cosmetology curricula. The physics are against it. A human hair weighs roughly 60 to 100 micrograms, nowhere near enough to break the surface tension of water by gravity. Whether a strand floats depends on surface tension, product residue and how you dropped it. The same strand can give different results on different days.
What these tests loosely detect is surface damage to the cuticle. And that is a real, meaningful thing.
Your hair's outer layer is made of overlapping cuticle scales. When they lie flat, water and product have difficulty getting in. When bleaching, heat, colouring or rough handling lifts and chips them, moisture moves in and out quickly. So the routine advice built on porosity is largely sensible. It is just measuring damage, not porosity, and it should be described that way.
Practical version: instead of a float test, ask whether your hair is chemically treated, heat-styled, coloured or bleached. If yes, treat it as damaged and more permeable. If it has never been processed, treat it as intact and less permeable. That is more reliable than anything involving a glass of water.
Coconut oil: the one with direct evidence
Coconut oil is the only common hair oil with strong published data on penetration, and the finding is specific.
A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Science compared mineral oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil using protein loss as the measure of damage. Among the three, coconut oil was the only one that reduced protein loss substantially, for both undamaged and damaged hair, applied either before or after washing.[1]
The mechanism was established separately using secondary ion mass spectrometry, which tracks where a substance physically ends up. Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft; mineral oil does not. The difference comes down to polarity. Coconut oil's affinity for hair protein lets it move in, while non-polar mineral oil sits on the surface.[2]
Why does that matter? Because hair damage is driven substantially by hygral fatigue, the repeated swelling and deswelling as hair absorbs water and dries. That cycling chips away at the cuticle. Oil inside the shaft limits how much the fibre swells, which reduces the damage from the cycle itself.[2] A surface coating cannot do this.
Sunflower oil is the instructive contrast. It is also a plant triglyceride, but its structure is bulky because of its double bonds, so it does not penetrate the fibre, and correspondingly showed no favourable effect on protein loss.[1]
That single comparison is the most useful thing in this entire field: the shape of the molecule decides everything, not whether it is natural.
The disclosure that usually gets left out
The researchers behind this work were employed by the Nature Care Division of Marico Industries,[1] an Indian company whose largest product is coconut hair oil.
That does not invalidate the findings. The mechanism was independently corroborated by mass spectrometry,[2] the work is published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it has been widely cited. But you should know that the strongest evidence for coconut oil was generated by a coconut oil company, and weigh it accordingly. Any brand citing this research without saying so is not giving you the whole picture.
Argan oil: good on the surface, thin on evidence
Argan oil is high in oleic acid and vitamin E, and it performs well as a finishing oil. It smooths, adds shine and reduces the appearance of frizz.
What it does not have is penetration data comparable to coconut oil's. Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid with a kink in its chain from the double bond, which is exactly the structural feature that stopped sunflower oil from entering the fibre.[1] The plausible expectation is that argan works mostly on the surface.
That is a legitimate job. Surface conditioning reduces friction, and friction during combing is a major cause of mechanical damage. Just do not expect it to do what coconut oil does internally, and be sceptical of claims that it repairs from within.
Jojoba: not an oil at all
Jojoba is a liquid wax ester, structurally different from the triglycerides in coconut, argan and sunflower. Its molecules are large, and large molecules do not enter the hair shaft.
Its real strength is on the scalp. Jojoba closely resembles human sebum, spreads easily, and is well tolerated, which makes it a sensible carrier for a scalp treatment. As a shaft treatment for reducing protein loss, there is no evidence base of the kind coconut oil has.
Matching oil to hair condition
Undamaged, never-processed hair. Coconut oil as a pre-wash treatment. It reduced protein loss in undamaged hair too, not only damaged.[1] Use a small amount and wash it out. This is the hair type most likely to feel weighed down.
Chemically treated, coloured or heat-damaged hair. Coconut oil pre-wash for the internal work, and a light surface oil such as argan on the lengths afterwards for smoothing. Damaged hair swells more, so the anti-hygral-fatigue effect matters most here.
Fine hair that goes limp. Coconut oil is solid at Indian winter temperatures and heavy in feel, which is a real objection. Use less, apply to mid-lengths and ends only, keep contact to an hour before washing, and skip the overnight version.
Oily or flake-prone scalp. Keep oil off the scalp or use jojoba, and limit contact time. Heavy overnight oiling on an already oily scalp in humid conditions can worsen dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis.
Curly and coily hair. Typically drier along the shaft because sebum travels down a coiled fibre poorly. Coconut pre-wash plus a surface oil after is a reasonable structure, adjusting quantity to how the hair responds.
How to actually apply it
Pre-wash beats post-wash for damage prevention. The protective effect works by limiting swelling during washing, so the oil needs to be in place before water is.[1][2]
Warm it slightly. Warm oil spreads further and penetrates better than cold, and you need less of it.
Thirty to sixty minutes is enough. Overnight is traditional and does no harm on a healthy scalp, but the marginal benefit past an hour is small and the dandruff risk goes up.
Do not skip conditioner. Oil reduces protein loss. It does not detangle or smooth the cuticle the way a conditioner does. They are different jobs.
Comb gently, and less. Vigorous combing causes real damage, and pre-wash oiling reduces but does not eliminate it.[1] Technique matters as much as product.

Which is the best hair oil for low porosity hair?
Low porosity usually means undamaged, intact cuticles. Coconut oil is the best-evidenced choice, since it reduced protein loss in undamaged hair as well as damaged.[1] Use small amounts as a pre-wash and wash it out thoroughly, because intact hair holds oil on the surface longer and feels heavy more easily.
Is the float test for hair porosity accurate?
No. It has never been validated in trichology or cosmetic chemistry literature, and a hair strand is far too light to break water's surface tension by gravity. What it loosely picks up is surface damage. Asking whether your hair has been coloured, bleached or heat-styled is more informative.
Does coconut oil really penetrate the hair shaft?

Can I leave hair oil in overnight?
On a healthy scalp, yes. The additional benefit beyond about an hour is limited, and in humid conditions prolonged contact can aggravate dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis. If your scalp flakes or itches, keep it to an hour before washing.
Does hair oiling cause hair fall?
Oiling itself does not. What causes visible shedding is the vigorous massage and combing that often accompanies it, which dislodges hairs already in the shedding phase. Those hairs were coming out regardless. If shedding is sudden, patchy or persistent, that warrants a doctor rather than a change of oil.
The short version
Molecular structure decides which oil does anything useful inside your hair. Coconut has the direct evidence, with the caveat about who funded it. Argan and jojoba work on the surface, which is a real but different job. Apply before washing, use less than you think, and ignore the float test.
