Pollution & Your Skin: How Urban Indian Air Accelerates Ageing

India has some of the most polluted air in the world. Eleven of the twenty most polluted cities globally are in India. Delhi's annual average PM2.5 regularly exceeds WHO safe limits by 10-20 times. How Pollution Damages Skin

Urban air pollution contains a complex mixture of particles and gases that damage skin through multiple pathways:

Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10)

PM2.5 particles — smaller than 2.5 micrometres — are small enough to penetrate the stratum corneum and reach the epidermis. Once inside the skin, they generate reactive oxygen species (free radicals) that damage lipids, proteins and DNA. Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Ozone (O3)

These gaseous pollutants react directly with skin surface lipids and proteins, oxidising the barrier's protective lipid layer and increasing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

Heavy Metals

Lead, cadmium and arsenic in urban particulate matter accumulate in skin tissue, disrupting enzyme function, generating oxidative stress, and impairing the skin's natural repair mechanisms.

What Pollution Looks Like on Indian Skin

  • Accelerated pigmentation — AhR-driven melanin upregulation worsens dark spots, uneven tone and melasma, particularly problematic in Indian skin's Fitzpatrick IV-V types with already-active melanocytes
