Shilajit: What It Is, What It Actually Does, and How to Take It Without Getting Scammed

Shilajit has had a strange few years in India. It went from something your grandfather kept in a small brass container to something sold in gummies, shots, sachets, and a lot of very confident Instagram reels. Prices range from Rs. 200 to Rs. 4,000 for what looks like the same black paste. Most people buying it have no way of telling the difference.

This is the guide we wish existed when we started formulating ours. It covers what shilajit is, what the research does and doesn't support, how to actually take it, and how to check whether what you bought is real. Every claim below is referenced at the bottom.

What shilajit actually is

Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like exudate that seeps out of rock crevices in high-altitude mountain ranges, mostly the Himalayas, but also the Altai, Caucasus, and parts of Central Asia. It forms slowly, over centuries, as plant matter gets compressed between layers of rock and broken down by microbes and pressure.[4]

So it isn't a herb, and it isn't a mineral in the way people usually mean. It sits somewhere between the two: organic matter that has spent a very long time turning into something else.

In Sanskrit texts it appears as shilajatu, roughly "conqueror of rock" or "rock-born." Ayurveda classifies it as a rasayana, a category of substances used for vitality and long-term maintenance rather than for treating a specific complaint. It also carries the label yogavahi, meaning it is thought to carry and amplify the effects of whatever it's combined with. That second property is why traditional formulas rarely use shilajit alone.

What's inside it

Fulvic acid. The main active fraction, and usually the number brands print on the label. Fulvic acid is a small molecule — around 2 kDa — that stays soluble across a range of pH conditions, which is why it absorbs well.[4] Genuine shilajit resin typically tests somewhere in the 50 to 80 percent range for total humic substances, with fulvic acid a portion of that. Be a little suspicious of anyone advertising 99 percent fulvic acid in a resin. It's not how the material works.

Dibenzo-α-pyrones (DBPs). These are the compounds researchers point to when they talk about shilajit and energy. Along with fulvic acid, DBPs are identified in the literature as the constituents most likely responsible for shilajit's observed effects.[3]

Trace minerals. Iron, magnesium, zinc, and a long tail of others in small amounts. This matters for safety as much as benefit, which we'll come back to.

What the research actually shows

Here's where we'll be less exciting than the average shilajit ad.

The clinical evidence for shilajit exists, but it's thin. A 2014 review in Phytotherapy Research put it plainly: relatively few well-controlled human studies have been conducted, even as animal and in vitro work has grown.[3] Most human studies are small, use purified standardised extracts rather than raw resin, and several are funded by the companies making the material. Both of the trials cited below used PrimaVie®, a branded purified shilajit from the ingredient supplier Natreon — and Natreon funded the 2019 one. That doesn't make the findings worthless. It does mean you should read them as "promising, early" rather than "proven."

What's been looked at:

Fatigue and energy. This is the strongest thread. Animal and human data support shilajit's traditional use as a revitaliser, with enhanced ATP production proposed as the mechanism.[3] Still modest, still early.

Male hormonal health. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Andrologia in 2016 gave 75 healthy men aged 45 to 55 a purified shilajit extract at 250 mg twice daily for 90 days, and reported significant increases in total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS compared to placebo, with LH and FSH maintained.[1] One study, one site, 75 people. Interesting, not settled.

Exercise recovery and muscle performance. A 2019 trial in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition followed 63 recreationally active men over eight weeks. The group taking 500 mg daily retained more maximal strength after a fatiguing exercise protocol than the placebo or 250 mg groups, and showed lower baseline hydroxyproline, a marker of collagen breakdown.[2] Again, small, and funded by the ingredient supplier.

Cognition. Early laboratory work found that fulvic acid interferes with tau protein self-aggregation in vitro, which is why shilajit appears in Alzheimer's research discussions.[4] This is a long way from a human outcome. Treat it as a research direction, not a benefit.

Iron status. Shilajit contains iron, and some traditional use centres on this. If you're actually anaemic, get a blood test and treat it properly. Don't self-medicate with a supplement.

What shilajit is not: a treatment for any diagnosed condition, a replacement for medication, or a fix for sleep debt. If you're exhausted because you're sleeping five hours a night, no resin is going to solve that.

How to take it

Dose. For resin, roughly a pea-sized portion, about 300 to 500 mg, once daily. The doses used in the two human trials above were 250 mg twice daily and 500 mg daily.[1][2] Start at the lower end. There's no benefit to taking more, and the mineral content makes "more is better" a bad instinct here.

How. Dissolve it in warm water or warm milk. Not boiling. Stir until it disperses. Genuine resin will dissolve into a dark, slightly cloudy liquid with no gritty residue at the bottom. If you're taking it with milk, that's the traditional pairing and it also helps with the taste, which is bitter and strongly mineral. Some people take to it immediately. Most don't.

When. Morning on an empty stomach is the usual recommendation. If it feels heavy, take it after breakfast instead. If you find it slightly stimulating, avoid taking it late in the evening.

How long. Give it eight to twelve weeks before you judge it. Both published trials ran for 8 to 12 weeks before measuring outcomes.[1][2] Rasayanas are not stimulants and they don't announce themselves on day two. Many practitioners suggest cycling: two to three months on, a few weeks off.

The part nobody wants to discuss: purity

This is the section that actually matters, and it's the reason cheap shilajit is a genuinely bad idea rather than just a waste of money.

Raw shilajit forms inside rock, so it picks up whatever the surrounding geology contains — which can include lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium and thallium. Traditional Ayurveda deals with this through shodhana, a purification process of repeated dissolution, filtration and sun-drying. Modern manufacturing adds filtration and lab testing on top.

Here is the finding that should change how you shop. A 2025 study in BMC Chemistry measured thallium across natural shilajit samples and commercial shilajit supplements from several countries. Natural samples reached up to 0.226 µg/g. The commercial supplements reached up to 0.5 µg/g — higher than the raw material.[5]

Read that again. Some processed, packaged, retail supplements carried more of a toxic metal than the unprocessed rock exudate did. "Purified" on a label is a marketing word unless someone shows you the numbers. The same study noted wide variation between regions, tracking the geology each sample came from.[5]

What to look for before you buy:

  • A heavy metals test report with actual numbers, not a badge that says "lab tested." Ask for it. A brand that has one will send it.
  • FSSAI licence number on the pack if you're buying in India.
  • A stated fulvic acid percentage that isn't absurd.
  • Clarity on form: resin, powder, or extract, and what the actual shilajit content is.
  • Batch numbers and expiry dates. Their absence tells you something about the operation.

Two rough home checks, neither conclusive: genuine resin softens when warmed in your palm and hardens in the fridge, and it dissolves in warm water without leaving sand or grit. Neither test tells you anything about heavy metals, which is the thing you actually can't see.

Resin, powder, capsules, or gummies?

Resin is the closest to traditional form and generally the most potent per gram. It's also the most annoying to use, and the taste is not for everyone.

Powder is usually resin that has been dried, often with a carrier added. Convenient, easier to dose, typically less concentrated. Check what the carrier is.

Capsules solve the taste problem entirely. Check the actual milligrams of shilajit rather than the total capsule weight.

Gummies are mostly sugar. If a gummy tastes pleasant, there is very little shilajit in it, because shilajit does not taste pleasant. Treat these as a confectionery product with a wellness label.

What pairs well with it

Because shilajit is yogavahi, traditional formulas combine it deliberately rather than selling it plain.

Ashwagandha is the most common partner. It's an adaptogen with a much larger body of research behind it, mostly around stress and cortisol, and the two are used together for what Ayurveda would call bala, or sustained strength.

Saffron appears in premium formulations, both for its own traditional use and because it's a marker of quality sourcing.

Gold (swarna bhasma) shows up in classical rasayana preparations. In modern products it's a traditional inclusion, and you should expect it to be present in trace quantities prepared to Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia standards.

Who should skip it

Talk to a doctor before starting if any of these apply, and skip it entirely in the first three:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Haemochromatosis, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, or any iron-overload condition
  • Children
  • Gout or high uric acid, since some reports suggest shilajit may raise uric acid levels
  • Diabetes or blood pressure medication, where interactions are possible and monitoring is sensible
  • Any active illness with fever

Frequently asked questions

Is shilajit safe to take every day?

For most healthy adults, a purified, properly tested product at 300 to 500 mg daily is considered safe, and the published trials ran daily dosing for 8 to 12 weeks without serious adverse events.[1][2][3] The risk is not the shilajit itself but what a badly made product carries with it — see the purity section. Many practitioners suggest cycling rather than taking it indefinitely.

How long does shilajit take to work?

Give it eight to twelve weeks. Both human trials measured outcomes at 8 weeks and 90 days respectively.[1][2] If you're expecting something on day three, you're thinking of a stimulant, not a rasayana.

Can women take shilajit?

Yes. The marketing skews male because the best-known trial looked at testosterone in men, but nothing in the traditional use or the composition makes it a men-only substance. Women in Ayurvedic practice have used it as a rasayana for the same reasons anyone else does. Skip it during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and avoid it with any iron-overload condition.

What time of day should I take shilajit?

Morning, on an empty stomach, dissolved in warm water or warm milk. If it sits heavily, take it after breakfast instead. Avoid late evening if you find it stimulating.

How can I tell if my shilajit is real?

Does shilajit have side effects?

Mild digestive discomfort is the most commonly reported issue. The 2014 safety review found shilajit's safety well documented in animal and human studies at standard doses.[3] The real concern is contamination in poorly made products, not the substance itself. If you have gout, an iron-overload condition, or take medication for diabetes or blood pressure, talk to a doctor first.

Is shilajit resin better than capsules?

Resin is closest to the traditional form and generally more concentrated per gram; capsules are easier to dose and avoid the taste. Both can be well made or badly made. The lab report matters far more than the format.

The honest summary

Shilajit is a real traditional substance with a real, if small, evidence base. It is not magic, it works slowly if it works for you, and the difference between a good one and a bad one is invisible to the naked eye. Buy from someone who will show you a test report, take a sensible dose, give it three months, and pay attention to whether anything actually changes.

If nothing does, stop taking it. That's allowed too.
