What Is Hair Porosity? The Complete Guide to Understanding Your Hair

Hair porosity is everywhere in hair care right now. Quizzes, product lines, entire routines are built on it. And underneath the marketing there is a real idea worth understanding.

There is also a very popular test for it that does not work.

This guide separates the two: what porosity actually describes, why the float test is unreliable, how to work out where your hair sits without it, and what to change once you know. Every claim is referenced at the bottom.

What porosity actually means

Your hair is a fibre with three layers. The one that matters here is the outermost: the cuticle, made of flat, overlapping scales arranged like roof shingles.

When those scales lie flat and tight, water and product have difficulty getting past them. When they are lifted, chipped or worn away, moisture moves in and out far more easily.

Porosity is simply a description of that state. Low porosity means an intact, tightly closed cuticle. High porosity means a lifted or damaged one. Medium sits between.

That is the whole concept. It is not a hair type in the way curl pattern is, and it is not fixed for life. It is largely a measure of how much damage the cuticle has taken, which is why it changes when you colour your hair, and why it differs along a single strand: your ends are older and more weathered than your roots.

The float test does not work

The standard advice is to pull out a strand, drop it in a glass of water, and watch. Sinks fast means high porosity. Floats means low.

Skip it.

The float test has never been validated in the cosmetic chemistry or trichology literature, and it is not taught in regulated cosmetology curricula. It circulates because it is simple and satisfying to watch, not because anyone demonstrated it measures what it claims to.

The physics are the clearest objection. A human hair weighs roughly 60 to 100 micrograms. That is nowhere near enough mass to break through the surface tension of water by gravity alone. Whether your strand sits on the surface or drops depends on how you released it, whether there is product residue on it, the natural oils on your fingers, and the temperature of the water. Test the same strand twice and you can get two different answers.

What the test loosely picks up, when it picks up anything, is surface condition rather than internal permeability. Which is a real thing. It is just not what the test is being sold as measuring, and there is a far more reliable way to assess it.

How to work out your porosity without a glass of water

Ask about history and behaviour instead. This takes thirty seconds and is more accurate.

1. Has your hair been coloured, bleached, permed, straightened or keratin-treated in the last year? Chemical processing lifts and damages the cuticle. This is the single strongest indicator.

2. Do you use heat styling more than twice a week? Repeated heat degrades the cuticle over time.

3. After oiling, does your hair feel heavy and flat, or soft and smooth? Heavy and flat suggests product is sitting on the surface because it cannot get in.

4. Does your hair take unusually long to dry? Water struggling to leave usually means it struggled to enter, and is sitting on the surface.

5. Do conditioners seem to sit on top rather than absorbing? Same signal.

Reading it: No to 1 and 2, yes to 3, 4 and 5 points to low porosity, meaning an intact cuticle. Yes to 1 or 2, combined with dryness, roughness or frizz, points to high porosity. Neither pattern clearly, and you are in the middle.

The three states, and what each one needs

Low porosity: intact cuticle

Hair that has never been processed, with scales lying flat. Water beads before soaking in. Products sit on top. Takes a long time to get properly wet, and a long time to dry.

This is not a problem to fix. It is the healthy state of hair, and it means your cuticle is doing its job.

What it needs is less product, lighter product, and shorter contact time. Heavy oils sit on the surface and add weight. Apply small amounts to lengths and ends, avoid the roots, and skip overnight treatments — an hour is enough. Warm oil spreads further, so you need less of it.

High porosity: lifted or damaged cuticle

Usually the result of bleaching, colouring, chemical straightening or sustained heat. Absorbs water quickly and loses it just as fast. Feels dry, rough or frizzy. Tangles readily.

What it needs is richer conditioning and something that slows moisture loss. This is the hair type where overnight oiling genuinely earns its place, and where pre-wash treatment matters most.

Medium porosity: the middle

Accepts moisture reasonably well and holds it reasonably well. Most unprocessed hair with some heat exposure sits here. It needs consistent, moderate care rather than either extreme.

Why the oil you choose matters more than the amount

The most useful research in this area is not about porosity at all. It is about which oils can physically enter the hair fibre, and it was measured directly rather than assumed.

A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Science compared mineral oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil, using protein loss as the measure of damage. Coconut oil was the only one that substantially reduced protein loss, in both damaged and undamaged hair, applied before or after washing.[1]

The mechanism was confirmed separately using secondary ion mass spectrometry, which physically tracks where a substance ends up. Coconut oil penetrates the shaft. Mineral oil does not, because it is non-polar and has no affinity for hair protein.[2]

Sunflower oil is the instructive case. It is a plant triglyceride, exactly like coconut oil, but the double bonds in its fatty acid chains make the molecule bulky, so it does not enter the fibre, and showed no favourable effect on protein loss.[1]

So the variable is not whether an oil is natural. It is molecular shape. A bulky, kinked molecule stays on the surface regardless of how good the oil is otherwise.

One disclosure worth making: the researchers behind this work were employed by the Nature Care Division of Marico Industries, an Indian company whose largest product is coconut hair oil.[1] That does not invalidate the findings, and the mechanism was independently corroborated,[2] but you should know who funded the strongest evidence for coconut oil.

Why penetration matters

Hair damage is driven substantially by hygral fatigue: the repeated swelling and deswelling as hair takes on water and dries again. That cycling wears at the cuticle over time.

An oil inside the fibre limits how much it swells, which reduces the damage caused by the cycle itself.[2] A surface coating cannot do this. That is why pre-wash oiling protects better than post-wash application — the oil needs to be in place before the water is.

For high-porosity hair, which swells more, this matters most. For low-porosity hair that gets weighed down, a lighter surface oil is often the better practical trade, even though it does less inside the fibre. Surface conditioning reduces friction during combing, and friction is itself a significant cause of mechanical damage.

What porosity does not explain

Porosity is useful for choosing products. It is not a diagnosis.

It does not explain hair loss, shedding, thinning, or scalp conditions. If you are dealing with sudden or patchy hair loss, a widening parting, scalp pain, burning or persistent scaling, that warrants a dermatologist rather than a different oil. Thyroid disorders, iron deficiency and telogen effluvium are common, treatable, and unrelated to porosity.

Does low porosity hair mean unhealthy hair?

The opposite. A tightly closed cuticle is what healthy, unprocessed hair looks like. It just means standard heavy-oiling advice was not designed for your hair.

How do I know if my hair is damaged or just low porosity?

They are close to opposites. Damaged hair is more permeable, absorbs quickly, dries fast and feels rough. Low-porosity hair resists water, takes ages to dry and often feels smooth. If your hair has never been coloured or heat-styled and still resists product, that is intact cuticle rather than damage.

The short version

Porosity describes cuticle condition, and cuticle condition is mostly a record of what has been done to your hair. Skip the float test and ask about chemical and heat history instead. If your hair is intact, use less and lighter. If it is processed, go richer and apply before washing. And if the real issue is shedding or scalp trouble, porosity is not the question to be asking.
